An impending recession, global inflation, calls for shorter work weeks and hybrid arrangements – here are just some of the issues floating around as we usher in a post-pandemic world plagued by tumultuous economic conditions.
You must be asking yourself – to stay in my job or to leave? Should I make a career switch? How should I be handling my finances? Should I buy the (crypto) dip or save my money for emergencies in the future?
The big question is… What do we want? Most importantly, what do we need?
According to a recent post by NTUC’s Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng, workers have voiced out the following desires;
✔️ Purpose in your career
✔️ Peace of mind at work
✔️ To be your own boss
✔️ To excel at home and at work
✔️ To be treated fairly
In a Facebook post, Mr Ng also shared that a larger-scale engagement series will be launched this year.
Refreshing the Labour Movement’s Compact with a new generation of workers
In his May Day speech earlier this year, the NTUC labour chief said that;
“NTUC must innovate with concrete plans, co-create and co-solve. Beyond consensus building with our tripartite partners, we must recalibrate our advocacy and representation to support a greater diversity of workforce segments.”
Staying true to what was delivered in the May Day Rally, Mr Ng also called for workers to take a moment to;
- Think about what they want at work and what resonates with them?
- What do you see yourselves doing in the next 10, 20, 30 years from now?
- How can NTUC help?
- What can we co-create together?
To many, answering the simple question of “What do you want” may seem easy? But how can we collectively find solutions to meet the different needs of every worker in Singapore?
In times like these, we all need a little help. May the odds be ever in our favour – we can’t wait to see what’s in store for workers on our lil’ island.
